Integration of Residence Card and My Number Card Starting June 14, 2026

26/2/21

The Immigration Services Agency has announced that, beginning June 14, 2026, residence cards and My Number cards will be integrated into a single card known as the “Specified Residence Card.”

For Special Permanent Residents, a similar integration will be implemented under the “Specified Special Permanent Resident Certificate.”

Advantages and Important Considerations

While carrying a single card improves convenience and simplifies identity verification, several points should be noted:

Limitations on Online Applications at Initial Stage
At the start of implementation, it may not be possible to apply for issuance of the Specified Residence Card simultaneously when filing certain residence applications online.

Validity Management
Even after integration, the validity of the My Number card functions will be limited to the expiration date of the holder’s period of stay. When extending the period of stay, separate procedures at the municipal office will also be required.

If you are uncertain whether you should switch to the integrated card, or if you are concerned about completing procedures in Japanese, you may first consult a trusted Japanese acquaintance or your local municipal office.

Details are available on the official website of the Immigration Services Agency.

Our office also provides consultation regarding these procedures.
