Before Starting a Part-Time Job: Check Your Permission for Activities Outside Status

26/3/31

Thank you for visiting our website.
This is Administrative Scrivener Aeternea Legal Associates.

A new academic year is about to begin. This is an important reminder for international students living in Nagano and Niigata Prefectures regarding part-time work.

With a “Student”(Ryugaku)  residence status alone, you are not allowed to work in Japan in principle. To work part-time at convenience stores, supermarkets, or similar places, you must obtain “Permit to Engage in Activity Other Than That Permitted by the Status of Residence Previously Granted.”(Shikakugaikatsudou)

Once you receive this permission, you may:

  • Work up to 28 hours per week

  • Work up to 8 hours per day during long school holidays such as summer vacation

If you have multiple part-time jobs, the total working hours must still be within 28 hours per week.

■ Jobs you cannot do even with permission
Even within 28 hours, the following jobs are strictly prohibited by law:

  • Work related to adult entertainment businesses (snack bars, host clubs, nightclubs, etc.)

  • Pachinko parlors, mahjong parlors, and game centers

You are not allowed to work in these places even for cleaning or kitchen duties.

You should also be cautious about suspicious part-time job offers on social media, such as:

  • High-paying phone services

  • Package receiving services

  • SIM card contract arrangements

These so-called “illegal part-time jobs” may involve criminal activities.

■ How to check if you already have permission
If you applied when entering Japan, you may already have permission. You can check by:

  • Checking the back of your residence card

  • Looking for a permission sticker in your passport

  • Confirming you have a permission document

■ Application support (Nagano & Niigata only)
If you do not have time to visit the Immigration Office or if it is difficult to travel, our office can apply on your behalf.

Fee: JPY 6,600 (tax included)
*For international students only

*Additional transportation fee (JPY 2,000–3,000) may apply for distant areas such as southern Nagano or Niigata.

Required documents:

  • Passport

  • Residence card

  • Student ID

  • Power of attorney

  • School permission letter (if required)

We will temporarily keep your passport and residence card. A receipt will be issued. Please be careful during this period, especially regarding traffic accidents.

When changing your residence status from “Student”(Ryugaku) to “Designated Activities,”(Tokutei Katsudou) you must obtain permission again.

If you apply at the same time as the status change, online application is available and fees may be reduced.

Our office accepts applications for permission only.
