When starting a restaurant or food truck business in Japan, it is necessary to confirm from the facility design stage that the premises comply with sanitation standards and to submit an application for a business permit within the required time frame.

After the application is submitted, the public health center will conduct a facility inspection. In addition, the business operator may be required to attend a "New Business Operator Seminar."

​Following the amendment to the Food Sanitation Act in December 2023, when a restaurant business is transferred, it is no longer always necessary to obtain a new business permit.

Instead, the existing permit can be transferred by submitting a "Notification of Succession to Business Operator Status."

• Taking over an existing restaurant

• Transferring a restaurant business due to a lack of successors
